On Sunday (3) ended the 2025 edition of the World Water Sports, held in Singapore. The range of competitions, which had the brightness of Canadian Summer McIntosh and that of American Katie Ledecky as some of his highlights, again exhibited the difficulties of renewal of swimming in Brazil, which had no representative on the podium.
Like what had happened at the Paris Olympic Games last year, the country did not win open waters or pools medals. Who came closer was Guilherme Caribé, 22, in the 100 m free. He got fourth place, 0s18 behind the bronze owner, Australian Kyle Chalmers.
“I’m happy with my participation, but it’s pretty frustrating to hit fourth. This is the sport,” said the Bahian, who had already been eighth in the final of the 50m butterfly and lived the expectation of fighting for a medal in the 50 m free. In this race, however, ended up being out of the decision at OCBC Arena in Kallang.
Caribé was the only Brazilian to reach finals in speed tests. Names such as Guilherme Costa (400 m free) and Maria Fernanda Costa (200 m free and 400 m free) traveled to Singapore expecting to dispute the decisive batteries, but did not achieve enough results in the eliminatory stages throughout the week.
Brazil also did not approach the podium in the aquatic pole, the artistic swimming and the ornamental jumps. In the open waters dispute, in which he has a history of good performance, the country got a sixth place (10 km) and one eighth (5 km) with Ana Marcela Cunha, 33, who admitted to being close to retirement.
“It is obvious that we train and do everything to get to the podium, but not only that. We want to fight for first place. I don’t know if I will have another chance,” said the Bahian, who has an enviable curriculum, with 16 world medals and an Olympic gold, obtained at Tokyo games in 2021, 10 km.
It was also criticized the participation of the United States in the event. With 10 gold, 11 silver and 11 bronzes, the country got 32 medals, behind China (37) in total and being surpassed by China (15) and Australia (13) in gold. The result, partially attributed to a gastroenteritis crisis that spread to the delegation, was considered disappointing.
Legends of the pools, Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps published the photo of a tombstone “in memory of swimming from the United States”. The image was accompanied by the message: “Call it from a funeral or call it a new beginning. We have three years.” It was a reference to the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.
Katie Ledecky, 28, did not seem affected by the supposed bad US phase. The star, owner of nine Olympic gold medals, triumphed at the 1,500 m for the sixth time in the World Cup and was hepta at 800 m in a large final. He was champion with a time of 8min05s62, ahead of Australian Lani Pallister (8min0s98) and Canadian Summer McIntosh (8min07s29).
Mcintosh, bronze in this race, was one of the highlights in Singapore. The 18 -year -old Canadian was close to the Phelps record of five gold medals in a World Cup. She triumphed in the 200 m Medley, 400 m free and 200 m butterfly before closing her campaign on Sunday with a 400m Medley win.
