The US faces a strong challenge of democratic congressmen to recognize Palestine. This is helped by the decision of several world states.
More than 12 democratic members of the House of Representatives signed a letter calling on the government of US President Donald Trump to recognize the Palestinian State. Axios reported on Monday, according to which one Member plans to submit a resolution supporting the recognition of Palestine, TASR writes.
Signatories also pointed out the recent announcement of French President Emmanuel Macron, according to which France will recognize the Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly (UN VZ) in September. “We call on the governments of other states that have not yet recognized the Palestinian statehood – including the United States – to do so,” Democrats said in a letter to which Axios looked into.
France as an example
The challenge from the democratic members of the House of Representatives came at a time when the Palestinian State was announced, in addition to France, Canada, Britain and Malta.
Axios notes that the number of Democrats who have signed the letter is almost three times higher than the number of signatories of the 2023 resolution confirming the right to the existence of the State of Palestine.
Support in congresses
The petitioner of the letter, a deputy of the House of RO Khanna representatives, noted that the Palestinian state recognizes more than 147 countries and that the US “must not be isolated from the rest of the free world”.
Democratic Congressman Al Green told Axios that he intended to present a resolution in the congress that confirms the right of Palestine to exist.
Palestine as a sovereign state is currently recognizing 147 of the 193 UN Member States. In its establishment in 1993, the Slovak Republic legally received the recognition of the Palestinian State from the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic.
