JPP understands that Madeira Regional Government should send firefighters to the continent

JPP President Lina Pereira recalls that in the summer of 2024, when Madeira had a fire “lasted 16 days” in four municipalities in the region, the continent’s professional firefighters were displaced to the island to support those that fought the fire in Madeira.

Together for the People (JPP) of Madeira proposed, this Sunday, to the Regional Government (PSD/CDS) that makes available Madeiran Professional Firefighters to help in which are recorded in various areas of the continental territory.

“JPP considers that the autonomous region of Madeira, as an integral part of the Portuguese State, must demonstrate national solidarity and articulated response capacity in emergency situations,” the party said in a statement.

The JPP justifies the suggestion with “the severity of the situation that is lived in mainland Portugal, with a tendency to an alleged aggravation in the face of unfavorable climacteric conditions, where thousands of operational fuss fight daily multiple active fronts.”

JPP President Lina Pereira, cited in the document, recalls that in the summer of 2024, when Madeira had a fire “which lasted 16 days” in four municipalities in the region, teams of professional firefighters from the continent were displaced to the island to support those that fought fire in wood.

“It’s time to be high and now that the continent’s firefighters need everyone’s help,” adds the deputy in the Madeira Legislative Assembly.

Madeira has “professional firefighters device with competence”

The JPP leader points out that Madeira has a “professional firefighters device with competence, experience and preparation to operate in demanding scenarios.”

According to Lina Pereira, “sending teams or skills specialized to continental territory would be an important contribution to reinforce the means of combat, at the same time would affirm the spirit of cooperation and aid between regions, so necessary in times of crisis.”

The JPP official underlines that “solidarity between regions cannot only be evoked in political discourses”, and should be “realized in practical actions”.

Therefore, it urges the Regional Government of Madeira “to immediately fill in contacts with the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, in order to evaluate the needs on the ground and make available human and logistics media.”
