The city authorities in Beijing tighten flood measures with respect to the expected rains. The floods have claimed dozens of lives this year.

On Monday, Beijing called on residents in hilly suburbs to prepare for the next wave of heavy rains. A week ago, the city has been affected by extensive floods, which claimed dozens of victims and became the saddest since 2012. TASR has written about it based on Reuters report.

According to meteorologists, up to 200 millimeters of rainfall may fall in some parts of Beijing during the afternoon. The annual precipitation average in this 22 million city is approximately 600 millimeters.

Improvement of preparations

The municipal authorities are trying to strengthen the unsatisfactory flood protection, to specify the weather forecasts and update evacuation plans. At the same time, there are reports of victims that have died in flooded streams over the past days.

At the end of July, at least 44 people died in Beijing after a few days of heavy rains. Many of them have been stuck in the Mi-Jün Northeast of the City Northeast. The local authorities subsequently admitted shortcomings in crisis plans to manage extreme weather.

The highest degree of emergency

On Monday, the highest level of emergency applies in seven out of 16 Beijing districts, most of them in hilly areas in the west and north of the city. According to the authorities, the risk of tidal floods and landslides is “extremely high”.
