Lucy Reed († 15) from Gainsborough died tragically during the trip after she went to bathe shortly after a meal. The investigation of her death revealed that The teenager suffered a breathing failure after inhaling the stomach contents. The cause of death was asphyxia – steaming – the result of vomiting in water, writes.

The incident took place on June 24, 2023 in Cleethorpes, where the girl went with her mother and friend for a one -day trip. The group had lunch – pizza and fries – in a local restaurant. Her mother Liz begged her to wait a while after a meal, but Lucy still insisted that she would go to bathe before she left home.

According to Lucy’s testimony, she entered the shallow water along with a friend near the pier while her mother went to walk. When Lucy did not return to the agreed place, a large rescue action followed. The beach was crowded at that time. The searches were involved in the coastal patrol, police and volunteers.

The teenage body was found after more than three hours. She was taken to the hospital by air, but there they could only be declared dead. According to Koroner, Lucy tried to arrive at a place to stand, but moved away from the shore, where it was pulled by an outdoor wave. After about 30 minutes in the water, she began to vomit, in panic inhaled the contents of the stomach and lost consciousness.

Coroner officially closed a case as death by accident and stressed the risks of swimming after heavy food. “Lucy Alexander Reed died on June 24, 2023 in the Humber River at Cleethorpes due to asphyxia. Her death was an unintentional consequence of swimming with a full stomach, ” stated in the report.

The case was preceded by several delays, but according to the police and the coastal patrol, the earlier reaction would probably not change anything – Lucy was probably dead a few minutes after the incident. During this period, the coastal patrol dealt with up to 22 other reports of missing persons.

The rescue teams said it was like “finding a needle in a haystack”. At 17:00. The police received a key information from a witness who noticed a girl in need about 600 meters from the shore at 14:00. After the expansion of the search, Lucy was found and immediately evacuated by a helicopter.
