At least 60 immigrants died after a boat with about 157 people sink on the coast of Yemen on Sunday (3.ago.2025), due to bad weather.

The head of the Migration International Organization (OIM) in Yemen, ABDUSATTOR ESOEV, which the vessel wreck in the province of Abyan in the south of the country, and at least 68 bodies have been recovered. He said 12 people have been rescued and dozens are still missing.

Most victims are believed to be ethiopian citizens, said Oim, who classified the incident as “devastating”.

To date, the bodies of 54 migrants have been found on land in the south of Khanfar district, and another 14 were taken to the morgue of a hospital in Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan Province, the agency said (Associated Press).

“This devastating incident emphasizes the urgent need for reinforced protection mechanisms for immigrants who make dangerous trips, often facilitated by unscrupulous smugglers who exploit despair and vulnerability.”declared Esoev.

“What we defend to all Member States … is that they improve their regular routes so that people can immigrate by legal means rather than being caught or deceived by traffickers and make these dangerous trips.”said the head of the OIM at Yemen.

Yemen is a popular traffic country for many immigrants who go to Saudi Arabia, looking for better opportunities. Oim estimates hundreds have died or disappeared into wrecks in recent months.

In March, 2 boats carrying more than 180 migrants sank on the coast of Dhubab district in Yemen, due to the busy sea. Only 2 crew were rescued and the remaining passengers were never found.

Despite the risks, many immigrants continue to make the trip, with more than 60,000 arriving at Yemen only in 2024, according to the BBC.

A boat with the Turkey flag was filmed by taking people out of the water with the aid of buoys. The video was published and shared on social networks.
