The president of the Federal Senate, David Alcolumbre (Union-AP), reacted to the protest of opposition parliamentarians on Tuesday (5). According to him, the reaction to house arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) is “arbitrary exercise of his own reasons.”

Alcolumbre, in a statement released on Tuesday, also requested serenity and spirit of cooperation. The president of the Congress said he had a meeting with party leaders “for common sense to prevail and resume regular legislative activity.”

Parliament has obligations with the country in the assessment of articles essential to the Brazilian people. The occupation of the directors of the houses, which makes their operation unfeasible, constitutes arbitrary exercise of their own reasons, something unusual and alien to democratic principles.

I therefore make a call to serenity and the spirit of cooperation. We need to resume work with respect, civility and dialogue, so that Congress will continue to fulfill its mission in favor of Brazil and our population.

I will hold a meeting of leaders so that common sense prevails and resume regular legislative activity, even so that all political currents can express themselves legitimately in sessions of the Federal Senate and the House of Representatives.
