Dermatologist warns: This sunscreen does not protect your skin as you think

With the rising temperatures, the time passed outdoors also increases, whether on the beach, in the field or on the splanted of cities. With it, the need to protect the skin against the harmful effects of solar radiation grows. Applying sunscreen is an essential practice, but not all products offer proper protection and there are common errors in their use that compromises effectiveness.

According to news to the minute, dermatologist Marta Ribeiro Teixeira explained that the sun protection factor (FPS) represents how many times more time can stay in the sun without burning compared to the absence of protection.

For example, a protector with SPF 30 theoretically allows an exposure up to 30 times longer without causing burn. However, this value depends on factors such as the skin type, the amount of product applied, the intensity of radiation and the frequency with which it is reapplied.

Why FPS below 30 is not enough

According to the same expert, protectors with FPS less than 30 are not considered effective and should not be used. “Solar protectors below 30 do not protect the skin and are not recommended,” said Marta Ribeiro Teixeira.

The dermatologist recommends, whenever possible, the use of products with FPS 50 or higher, especially in light -skinned people, antecedents of skin cancer or conditions such as hyperpigmentation.

Do not forget the rays UVA

UVA rays penetrate more deeply than UVB and are associated with premature aging and increased risk of skin cancer.

Protection against this type of radiation is mandatory by law in sunscreens sold in the European Union. The legislation requires that UVA protection corresponds to at least one third of the FPS value to UVB.

Thus, a product with SPF 30 should ensure a minimum grape protection equivalent to 10. It is important to verify that the label clearly indicates protection against grapes and, preferably, against long grapes, which are especially harmful.

Apply every day, even in winter

Daily use of sunscreen should become a habit throughout the year. Ultraviolet radiation is present even on cloudy or cold days, which means that the skin is still at risk, even out of summer.

To ensure effectiveness, the product should be applied about 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every two hours, or whenever there is bathing or intense perspiration. It is still essential to use an appropriate amount, something that many consumers tend to neglect.

Another warning left by the dermatologist has to see with the reuse of sunscreens from the previous summer. Products outside the expiration date or poorly stored lose effectiveness and may leave the skin unprotected.

Attention to the most sensitive zones such as the face, neck, ears and hands, which are equally important and often forgotten.

Beware of out -of -term protectors

As concluded, the choice of protector suitable for the skin type and the intensity of sun exposure, as well as its correct application, are fundamental steps to ensure effective protection against sun damage.
