Finance Minister classified the payment system developed by the Central Bank in 2020, as a ‘sovereign technology’
The Minister of Finance, said on Tuesday (5) that is “out of question” any attempt to privatize the. During a meeting of the Sustainable Social Economic Development Council (CDDES), the advisory in Brasilia, the minister rejected multinational pressure on the Brazilian payment system, which he classified as a “sovereign technology”. “We can neither dream nor think, nor imagine in privatizing something that has no cost to the citizen,” said Haddad. “Imagine that we will give in to the pressure of multinationals that are bothered by technology … This is completely out of the question.”
The statements occur amid tensions with the United States, which investigate the Brazilian system through the office of the Commerce Representative (USTR). Although the American report does not directly mention PIX, the text points to possible unfair practices in electronic payment services developed by governments, which includes the Brazilian tool. According to USTR, these practices could undermine the competitiveness of US companies in the sector.
Created in 2020 and managed by the Central Bank, PIX allows instant and free transfers between users, 24 hours a day. Since its launch, the system has gained protagonism in Brazil and has attracted international attention, including as a model to other countries.
Haddad also commented on the search of the Brazilian government for strategic partnerships in areas such as the production of batteries and solar panels. According to him, the country is in a privileged position to attract investments in critical minerals and sustainable technologies, but caution is needed in relations with international powers. “We want more partnership, but we will not fall into the illusion of governments that, with misinformation, took aggressive measures against Brazil,” he said, in a veiled reference to the United States.
