José Mourinho was unable to hide the emotion when talking about Jorge Costa, during the press conference on Tuesday, on the eve of the Fenerbahçe game. The Portuguese coach was deeply shaken by the death of the former Captain of FC Porto, figure with whom he shared historical achievements and a connection far beyond football.
“It’s part of my story that goes away,” she started by saying Mourinho, visibly moved. “There are captains and leaders. It’s not about the armband, it’s about what they represent. Jorge Costa was one of those who cleaned the trash and let the coach do his job as a coach, not as a resort leader. This is the perfection for a coach.”
The coach preferred to put football in the background, focusing on the man he met closely: “Let’s forget the footballer and focus on Jorge Costa, his children, which I have met … I am very sad.”
Despite the difficult time, Mourinho assured that he will fulfill what he believes is the will of his friend: “I’m here because if he could talk to me now, I would tell me to play tomorrow and win. That was Jorge. I have a job to do. I may cry tomorrow.”
José Mourinho won the Champions League with FC Porto in 2004. Jorge Costa was then his captain. The former professional football player died today at the age of 53 from a cardiac arrest.
