A Florida jury condemned Tesla to pay 210 million euros to the victims of a fatal accident in 2019, involving a model equipped with the Autopilot system. The verdict marks a rare victory for victims of accidents related to the assisted driving of the Elon Musk brand – and could pave more lawsuits against the company.
According to Tesla’s onboard chamber records, the vehicle crossed a cross and collided violently with a parked Chevrolet Tahoe, in which the victims followed, without any attempted braking or deviation.
The jury’s decision comes at a delicate time for Tesla, as Elon Musk has been betting hard on robotaxis business growth based on a more advanced version of Autopilot. This verdict may now put additional pressure on the company, both legal and reputational.
