Benni McCarthy did not contain the excitement by recalling Jorge Costa, with whom he shared the FC Porto resort and raised some of the most important trophies of his career. The now coach of Kenya was thrilled during a press conference on Wednesday, visibly shaken by the death of former captain Portista.
In silence for long seconds, McCarthy failed to contain tears before being able to talk about the one he considers to have been more than a teammate. “Now it’s in a better place. My condolences to the family and all who loved him,” he said, with his embargoed voice. And he went on, “He was our brother, our leader. He was always the first to put himself ahead for all of us. It’s even sadder not having the opportunity to say goodbye.”
