Cucumbers are one of the most popular vegetables in Polish cuisine. They taste great as an addition to a sandwich or salad. We also make salads, soups and preserves. So it’s worth knowing how to store them correctly so that they remain soft and do not grow mold as long as possible.

Cucumbers are thermophilic vegetables, and in the fridge low temperature damages their structureso they soften and rot faster. In addition, there is moisture here, so it’s easy to develop mold.

The fridge is not the only place where cucumbers are not recommended. Let’s not put them next to tomatoes, bananas and apples. These vegetables and fruits secrete ethylene accelerating ripening. Therefore, cucumbers will break faster.

Cucumbers should be stored in a cool place. It is best for the temperature to be 15 degrees Celsius. Let’s keep them in a shady position, away from heat sources.

It is better not to put these vegetables into plastic containers or buckets. In such packaging they have difficult air access. That is why it is worth putting cucumbers into paper bags or wooden boxes. If we store them in such conditions, we will extend their service life.

Cucumber preserves, i.e. canned or store in an even cooler room, where the temperature is 5-6 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it’s best to keep them in the basement.

Place the tightly closed jars in a vertical position. We recommend checking the lids regularly, if they have sometimes been convex. In this situation, we are dealing with a broken content.

Properly stored home preserves will be fit for consumption for 6 months, while pasteurized up to a year. After opening, put the jars in the fridge – there they can spend a maximum of 3 months there. Each time we close the dishes tightly to protect canned and pickled against harmful microorganisms from the outside.
