The presence of a gun in the military base of Fort Stewart, in the state of Georgia (United States), has forced the closing of the closure on Wednesday morning, while the Facebook page of the Fort refers to “an ongoing situation” in which “casualties” have occurred. Army sources have reported shortly after five military has been injured, being treated in the place before being evacuated to the hospital, and the arrest of the attacker.
Fort Stewart trains and displays active and reserve army units and is home to the 3rd Infantry Division. It is located about 65 kilometers southwest of the city of Savannah. More than 10,000 people live in the barracks, including military, families and civil personnel.
The incident has occurred in the area of the combat team of the 2nd armored brigade over eleven in the morning (17.00 in peninsular Spain). An hour later, army spokesmen terminated the event, with the arrest of a suspect, without going into details. It was neutralized “at 11.35 and there is no active threat,” says the brief statement, in which the military authorities avoid giving more information waiting for the investigation of what happened. Nor have they transcended the identity and motivation of the attacker.
The County Sheriff’s Office is helping in the response to the shooting, but has sent all the questions and comments to the army. The FBI office in Atlanta, capital of the State, and Savannah, is also aware of the case, which is being “coordinated with the Army Criminal Investigation Division for any assistance they may require.”
The governor of Georgia, Republican Brian Kemp, who both he and his family are “sad for today’s tragedy” at the base. “We have the victims, their families and all those who have responded to the call for service [los militares] In our hearts and prayers, and we ask all the Georgians to do the same, ”said Kemp.
