Raise money on the ATM? Police alert to 'invisible' trap that can 'empty' your account

An unusual situation registered in a common access place has generated alarm among those who use automatic equipment on a daily basis. The recording, made by a citizen and shared on social networks, shows an unexpected detail on the screen of a multi -multibanco terminal, which led many to interpret the moment as a sign of possible external interference.

According to Polygraph SIC, the video shows what appears to be a visible cursor on the screen of a multi -multibanco terminal. The recording author warns those present so as not to use the machine, raising suspicions that the equipment could be being remotely controlled. The image in itself caused apprehension, and quickly spread over possible electronic fraud.

Possible technical causes explain the phenomenon

Although the situation is unusual, the presence of graphic elements such as cursors may occur at certain times, namely during maintenance operations, software updates or technical tests performed at a distance.

These procedures are carried out by terminal management entities, not necessarily implying any threat to users.

Video without sufficient context for conclusions

The video does not provide detailed information about what was happening at the time of recording. The absence of technical context makes the interpretation of what was really going on in the terminal captured.

The warning tone used by the citizen who filmed the situation contributed to the alarm among users. The message broadcast was precautionary, but eventually generated widespread fear, even without official confirmation.

Experts recall that this type of image, when analyzed outside its technical context, can easily be misunderstood. The presence of unusual elements on the screen does not in itself mean that the equipment has been manipulated with criminal intentions.

Authorities recommend precaution

Security forces and banking institutions often warn of the need for attention when using automatic boxes.

If a user detects something strange, such as loose keyboards, suspicious chambers or physical changes should avoid using the equipment and contact the responsible entity or public safety police.

There is no evidence of confirmed attack

Despite the impact caused by the images, it has not been recorded, so far, any confirmation that the terminal was compromised. The absence of concrete evidence prevents definitive conclusions from the incident from withdrawing.

The situation continues to be accompanied by the competent entities, but the simple appearance of a cursor on the screen is not, by itself, proof of external control or computer attack.

According to, experts continue to advise users’ surveillance and immediate reporting of any anomalous behavior detected in ATMs.
