Pope Leo XIV criticized the “illusory security” of the global nuclear dissuasion system on Wednesday (6), on the 80th anniversary of the launch of the US atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima at the end of World War II.

Leo XIV, the first US -born Pope, said in his weekly audience that the destruction in, which killed about 78,000 people instantly, should serve “as a universal warning against the devastation caused … by nuclear weapons.”

“I hope that in the contemporary world, marked by strong tensions and bloody conflicts, illusory security based on the threat of mutual destruction gives way to … Dialogue practice,” he added.

The Pontiff also mentioned them, saying that he wants to “offer my prayers to all those who have suffered the physical, psychological and social effects of these events.”

While the Catholic Church, for decades, accepted the system of nuclear dissuasion developed in the predecessor of Leo, Pope Francis, changed the teaching of the Church to condemn the possession of nuclear weapons.
