The Brazilian business sector demonstrates growing concern about the impact of the tariffs imposed by the United States and the apparent absence of diplomatic paths to resolve the situation. The evaluation was shared by the former WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo, during the WW. According to him, who maintains frequent contact with several sectors affected by the measure, the situation is a source of great warning.
According to Azevêdo, there are two crucial points that worry the business community. The first is the mistaken perception that the tariff “was not that bad” due to the exceptions granted. “It’s like having a gun pointed at the head and, instead of being executed, losing only one arm. There is no reason for satisfaction,” he exemplified.
The affected sectors represent thousands of jobs and families that will suffer the direct consequences of the imposed tariffs. The situation is aggravated by the absence of effective negotiation channels between the two countries.
Azevêdo pointed out that in about 600 tariff lines were not the result of Brazilian concessions or bilateral negotiations. On the contrary, after companies show that sanctions would be harmful to the US economy.
The lack of a traditional diplomatic path has led the private sector to seek alternative alliances and channels in the United States. However, Azevêdo points out that all paths currently converge to the White House, where there is no apparent willingness for dialogue or negotiation that can relieve the situation.
