Base of Russian nuclear submarines after the earthquake
Light damage will have been caused by tsunami that emerged after the 8.8 earthquake that shook the Pacific last week.
The strong earthquake of magnitude 8.8 that reached Russia’s extreme east last week caused Light damage to nuclear submarines base From Rybachiy on the Kamchatka Peninsula, according to recently analyzed satellite images.
The photographs taken on Sunday by Planet Labs show a floating pier at the base – a critical location for the Pacific Russian fleet – partially separated from its dock. Although several other pier remains intact, the damaged structure seems to have been hit by tsunami waves triggered by the earthquake. According to, despite the incident, five submarines and other vessels were still moved nearby, and a major operational interruption is not foreseen.
The Russian government did not recognize any damage and the state media remained silent. International nuclear monitoring agencies did not report unusual levels of radiation in the area. Independent military investigators, including the conflict intelligence team, have evaluated that it is unlikely that the damage to the pier will harm the base prompt combat and that repairs should be relatively cheap.
Rybachiy, built during the Soviet era, is located in a sheltered cove to protect the naval assets from the strict climate of the Pacific. In recent years, Russia invested in the modernization of the basehaving commissioned at least two new floating pier since the beginning of the war in Ukraine in 2022.
The epicenter of the earthquake was about 128 qilometers from Rybachiyshaking the region and generating waves of tsunami that were observed in the sea but did not reach the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchaskiy, which suffered only slight damage. The submarine base and the adjacent Rybachiy city are designated as high safety zones, with rigorously controlled public access.
The incident occurs in the middle of a intense military activity in the far east of Russia. Early this summer, Moscow moved certain military assets to the east after a surprise attack on Ukrainian drones in Russian territory, which hit various strategic locations, including an eastern aerodrome.
