"Talking about any humanity of the Russians is useless": Russian drones pursue civilians in Kherson

Exhausted locals cry with relief when they reach a point of help

Russia has launched a new attempt to exercise control over the city of Kherson, located in southern Ukraine, through threats with drones on important access roads and attacking an essential bridge, dividing the city into two parts.

On Sunday, a wave of air strikes damaged an important bridge between the island of Kherson, Korabel, and the main city, triggering a widespread effort to remove about 1,800 Ukrainian civilians still living there. Russian forces seem to have not achieved evacuation efforts in the last three days, according to residents and rescue teams, in a rare moment of truce from daily civilian attacks on the city in recent months. On Wednesday, videos released on social networks confirm the resuming of Russian attacks near the bridge and on the island, where some Ukrainian military is believed to be highlighted.

Russian military blogs also warned Kerson residents that the main access road to the city, from the north, would be the target of attacks on long -range drones. On Wednesday, CNN witnessed a significant traffic and civilian traffic along the road, including a large group of cyclists, sometimes protected by hanging networks above asphalt to block drones.

The capture of the city and region of Kherson – taken in the early days of the war and then released by a rapid Ukrainian counter -positive in November 2022 – remains one of the main goals of Russian President Vladimir Putin in this conflict, and the renewed pressure to separate Korabel from the rest of the city has raised concerns that Russian forces can try to bombard and then disembark in the coming weeks.

Korabel’s evacuation continues, with rescuers to refer to CNN that the situation is calm while collecting some of the 925 people taken from the island by the end of the day. Bombardes remain at a rapid pace on the peninsula, according to reports from local inhabitants, but drones seem to leave the evacuation trains in peace. Exhausted local inhabitants cry out of relief and anxiety when they reach a point of help.

Nadiya, sitting on the back of the armored van that took her away, cried: “They are attacking so hard since morning. When is all this ending? We have gone mad with all this. When will they fall into themselves? Although they were “zombir” that day, the drones did not come to their home. “We’re tired of this. When Trump will arrive, or someone … We don’t deserve old age like we have here.” Nadiya has heard of the deadline set by US President Donald Trump for a peace agreement with Russia, but for her it changes nothing.

Most of the elderly taken from the island had received the promise of accommodation in the other place in the city, but there were few alternatives. Nina, 85, was exhausted with the heat of 35 degrees, holding the cane, already separated from her bags by the rescuers. “I have no plans, I will live wherever they take me,” he lamented. “I’m with one leg. I’m so tired of these shootings, I can’t take it anymore.”

Local Ukrainian authorities underline that any pause in the russian attacks with drones against the evacuation train is insignificant after months of repeated attacks against civilian targets.

“They absolutely care about the targets,” criticized Yaroslav Shanko, head of the Military Administration of the city of Kherson. “Talking about any humanity by the Russians is absolutely useless. The attacks against the community and the city are constant.”

Civilians are usually persecuted by Russian drones, whose operators exhibit their relentless attacks on online publications. Kherson’s main hospital welcomed 25 patients injured by bombing or drones.

Oleh, 62, was hit at 4:00 am on Wednesday morning, when he ran out to help after an attack with drones caused a fire that consumed the home of his neighbors. Then another “double touch” drone attacked. Oleh fell on his back on a fence, but his legs hanging at the top, protecting the trunk, but not her legs. Anklet ligasures hid the wounds caused by shrapnel on their feet.

“It’s dangerous to live there, we must always be aware,” said Oleh, referring to the detection of drones. “A double tap. This is how they [os russos] operate. They destroy a house, it ignites itself. One minute later, another appears, checking if the house is burning or if someone is trying to erase it. So they kill and destroy even more. ”

Oleh is one of many patients living alone and cannot be discharged from the hospital quickly as it cannot walk, increasing the occupation of the beds. Three drones flew over the premises during the CNN visit, according to local authorities. The gunfire and the buzzing of the engines cross the hospital windows.
