US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that there is a high probability of his early meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Rubio: Many obstacles need to be overcome to make the meeting
“There is a good chance that we will meet very soon,” Trump told reporters after the White House confirmed his openness to the meeting with Putin to discuss the Russian invasion in Ukraine. Details of the possible date and place of the meeting have not yet been published, AFP said.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned on Wednesday that “many obstacles” must be overcome in order for Trump and Putin to be held.
“Today has been a good day, but there is still a lot of work to do. There are still many obstacles to overcome, and we hope that we will succeed in the coming days, hours, maybe weeks,” said Rubio for Fox Business after the White House announced that Trump is “open” to a meeting with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyra Zelensky.
According to Trump, Witkoff and Putin’s meeting made great progress
On Wednesday in Moscow, a meeting of Trump’s special ambassador Steve Witkoff with Putin took place. According to Trump, “great progress” has been made. Everyone agreed that the war in Ukraine must end, said Trump, saying that the US would be trying to do it in the next few days and weeks.
Trump said on Truth Social that after Witkoff’s meeting with Putin he reported on its results of some European US allies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj then confirmed on the X Network that he was phoning Trump. According to him, the interview was also attended by leaders of European countries.
The US is likely to introduce secondary sanctions against Russia
Reuters shortly before, referring to an unnamed White House representative, reported that the United States is likely to impose secondary sanctions against Russia on Friday, TASR writes.
Trump had previously a question of whether Moscow could avoid the imposition of US sanctions, he said that the condition was the conclusion of an agreement, “thanks to which people will stop dying”. According to him, the next steps of Washington will depend on the outcome of Witkoff’s negotiations in Moscow.
