Iran reiterated his support for the Chií Lebanese Movement Hizbulá, his main Antiisraeli ally, after the organization rejected a plan presented by the Lebanon government for its disarmament. “Any decision on this matter will ultimately depend on Hizbulá. We support it from a distance, but we do not intervene in their decisions,” said Iranian Foreign Minister Abás Araqchí, in an interview with state television late on Wednesday. Araqchí highlighted the ability of Hizbulá’s weapons in the confrontation with Israel, and said that the Israeli part considers that, after the blows suffered by the Lebanese group last year, “there has been a leading opportunity to implement this plan and disarm it.” Declarations occur in a context of growing internal pressure in Lebanon to limit the military power of Hizbulá, amid international efforts to descale tensions on the border with Israel.
