A whirlwind of statements, some of them contradictory to each other, surrounds the negotiation that seeks to supposedly happen next week with the aim of achieving a definitive step for the end of the war in Ukraine. This weekend expires to reach a peace agreement with kyiv. The White House has warned the Kremlin that if the negotiation is unlocked the favorite sword of the US president for any geopolitical knot that is on his way.
The very celebration of the match is a gift for Putin. Although the Russians on foot are already beginning to feel war in their daily lives (with the increase in the price of fuels and in both cases the consequence of the Ukrainian bombings), the war economy continues to function and produce relatively efficiently. Putin is now granted a direct negotiation with Washington a dismembered, politically innerme and out of Europe and NATO. The only utility of the summit would be to offer the US President the opportunity to unfold from his threat of sanctions arguing that there is a negotiating progress, which in turn would allow Kremlin to win a very valuable time.
Moscow has announced that the meeting will be bilateral (between the two presidents). Washington said he wants at least the presence of Zelenski. The most threatened territory if Putin concludes that he leaves free invading bordering countries with the security excuse. On paper, the only thing that contributes is a photo in which Putin obtains status as nineteenth -century statesman that the world is distributed with a handshake, and Trump is sold as the great global Muñidor, an immense frivolity in a war in which hundreds of thousands of people have died.
Putin’s declared aspiration to return to a Europe of blocks and areas of influence is a denial of the sovereignty of the countries of the continent and the existence of the European Union. In Trump’s case, not having NATO countries, which have been the support of Ukraine even at the times when Washington’s contribution has failed, means the nth proof of his abdication as the leader of the defense of democracies and his contempt of the international order based on rules.
Talking about Ukraine without Ukraine is intolerable. And the role of European institutions, to which Ukrainians have committed their future, must be recognized. Zelenski himself has made it clear that he will not participate in a meeting without them. Ukraine and Europe cannot be the propitiatory victims of this outdated and truculent diplomacy.
