The body will be veiled this Saturday (9), from 18h, on the block of the Samba Serrano samba school, in Madureira, in the North Zone of Rio. The ceremony will be open to the public and will follow the format of “Gurim”, a tradition of African origin that celebrates the life of the deceased with music and drink to relieve mourning. The wake will extend until 10 am on Sunday morning (10), with a moment restricted to family and close friends. The burial is scheduled for 11am on Sunday at the Jardim da Saudade Cemetery in Sulacap.

Arlindo Cruz’s health has been weakened since 2017 when he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. At the time, he spent almost a year and a half hospitalized and since then dealt with the sequelae of the disease, which pushed him off the stage.

In a statement, Arlindo Cruz’s family expressed his mourning: “More than an artist, Arlindo was a samba poet, a man of faith, generosity and joy, who dedicated his life to leading music and love to all who crossed his way. His voice, his compositions and his smile will remain alive in the memory and heart of millions of admirers.” The note thanks the affection and prayers received throughout the artist’s trajectory and especially at the time of farewell, highlighting the “huge legacy for Brazilian culture” and the “example of strength, humility and passion for art” that he leaves.

Arlindo Cruz joined the backyard group and was consecrated As a composer of hits recorded by big names like Beth Carvalho and Zeca Pagodinho, and also as a solo career singer. The City Hall decreed official mourning of three days for the death of the sambista.
