The Pará Public Defender’s Consumer Protection Center (Nudecon) released on Friday (8) that it notified lodging platforms on abusive prices in Belém hotels and inns during the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held in November 2025.

The measure was taken in partnership with Procon, the State Public Prosecution Service and the State Attorney General, after complaints from social movements and ombudsmen.

COP30 is considered the largest global meeting on climate change and is expected to gather about 40,000 participants among heads of state, negotiators, scientists, activists and representatives of civil society and for the first time will be headquartered in the Amazon, strategic region in discussions on environmental preservation.

According to the nudecon coordinator, public defender Cássio Bitar, the high values make the participation of representatives of civil society. “We are provoking dialogue with large platforms, as they have joint and several liability. Our goal is to guarantee consumer law and seek quick and effective solutions,” he said.

The recommendation states that within 10 days, platforms notify advertisers when the average rate of daily rates during the COP30 period exceeds three times the average high season registered in the last 12 months or the market average for similar accommodations. If this happens, prices should be adjusted within 48 hours.

If the orientation is not met, the platforms should suspend ads until the amounts are corrected. It has also been asked that the websites to inform consumers the average market prices and warn when there is a significant increase for the same type of accommodation.

The initiative is supported by the Federal Supreme Court (STF), which, by judging funds on the Internet Civil Mark, acknowledged that platforms can be held responsible for illicit content published by third parties, even without court order.
