New electric cars in Italy will reach up to EUR 10,000 per person. The government is thus trying to improve the urban air and support climate protection.

The Italian government approved new subsidies worth almost EUR 600 million to support the purchase of electric vehicles, this was announced on Friday (8 August) by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy. TASR reports this based on Reuters report.

As part of the support scheme, the state will offer up to EUR 10,000 to individuals and € 20,000 to small companies, which will cover up to 30 % of the total purchase price of a new electric passenger or commercial vehicle. Subsidies, financed from the European Union funds for renewal after the COVID-19 pandemic, will be reserved for individuals or companies in larger urban areas to reduce pollution and improve air quality. At the same time, the beneficiaries will have to eliminate the vehicle with the EURO 5 or lower, produced in 2015 or earlier, said the ministry.

The sale of electric vehicles in Europe is struggling with difficulties caused by high prices and lack of charging stations, although the European Union is gradually trying to eliminate vehicles with an internal combustion engine to achieve its climate protection goals. In Italy, battery electric vehicles accounted for only 6 % of the sales of new cars this June, while it was an average of 15 % across the EU.
