The cities of Rio de Janeiro and Niterói presented on Friday (8.ago.2025) their candidacy to host the Pan American Games from 2031 to voters of the Olympic committees of the continent countries, which will be responsible for the choice.
The meeting was held in Asuncion, capital of Paraguay, during the 63rd Assembly of Panam Sports, which brings together representatives of the 41 committees of the Americas.
The Paraguayan capital is the only competitor of the Brazilian candidacy. The choice of 2031 PAN headquarters will take place at the Panam Sports assembly scheduled for October in Santiago, Chile.
The president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, Marco La Porta, argued that, if the games are in the state of Rio de Janeiro, he will intensify the exchange between the American countries for sports development through seminars, clinics and training fields for athletes, coaches and leaders.
“Our main mission is to contribute to the evolution of Pan American sport, starting even before 2031”said the door.
The mayors of the two cities were also present. Eduardo Paes (PSD), who runs the capital, said the city has a wide hotel network and projects a public-private partnership for the construction of the Pan American village in the port area, next to the Center.
“Along with the hospitality, beauty and energy of our people, there is solid planning and responsibility in the management of this project”said Paes.
The mayor of Niterói, Rodrigo Neves (PDT), said that sport is a form of social transformation and integration. Deputy mayor of the city and Olympic candle medalist, Isabel Swan (PV) added that most of the facilities that will be used in the games are ready.
“We can focus on what matters most: offering excellence services and high-level test events”said Swan.
Accompanied by the Brazilian candidacy entourage the director of the Pan Rio-Niterói 2031 candidacy committee, Agberta Guimarães, Pan American medalist in Athletics; the national secretary of sports excellence of the Ministry of Sport, Iziane Marques, former basketball athlete; the vice president of the COB and Olympic medalist at Modern Pentathlo, Yane Marques; and COB General Director Emanuel Rego, Olympic Beach Volleyball Champion.
Also present as guests were the Olympic Volleyball Medalist and member of the International Olympic Committee Bernard Rajzman, the Golden Medalist in Basketball Hortência Marcari and former Dueor Thiago Pereira, the largest medalist in the history of the competition, with 23 podiums.
