Children are less ill, but that does not mean that the dangers disappear. Pediatrician Victoria Chomenko says seasonal dangers simply change in the form. During the warm season, the child’s body becomes vulnerable to infections that can be easily “caught” by swimming, eating uninvised fruits or even after sting. So, what summer infections usually threaten children and how can parents take care of their safety in advance?
The dangers of sting
In the summer, the risk of tick -bite is particularly increased as these parasites can transmit Lyme disease or tick -borne encephalitis. Particularly dangerous are ticks that remain blood -sucking for more than 24 hours, as the likelihood of infection is significantly increased.
What if the child is struck by ticks:
- Immediately remove ticks, preferably by seeking a medical facility.
- If the mite has suckled for more than a day, it is recommended to consult your doctor; Children over 8 years of age are sometimes given a prophylactic DOXYCYCLINE course.
To avoid stinging, choose long -sleeved clothes, use repellents and check your child’s body after walks.
Water dangers during the summer
Floating in unscrewed water bodies can also be a source of infection. Particularly dangerous are contaminated lakes, water bodies near the cleaning facilities or space with large human flows.
Water bodies can live:
- Intestinal infections (Salmonella, E. coli)
- Coxsackie viruses causing herpangin, stomatitis, and sometimes even serous meningitis
After swimming:
- Be sure to wash the shower and rinse your child’s eyes, nose and mouth with clean water.
- Avoid drinking water from unscrewed deposits.
- If you see garbage, algae or cloudy water next to it, do not rush to swim.

Food hazards
Food poisoning is often increased in the summer. The main reasons are unwashed fruits and vegetables, defective food and water of questionable quality.
How to prevent food -induced infections:
- Always wash your hands before eating and after being outdoors.
- Even if the fruits and vegetables look clean, always wash them thoroughly even after shopping.
- Avoid eating food that has long been stored in the sun or without freezing.
- Drink only boiled or bottled water.
Colds and respiratory infections
Cold drinks, sudden changes in temperature, air conditioners – all of which can cause respiratory diseases. Also, during swimming, the child can swallow water, which causes infections of ear, throat and nasopharynx.
Regular rinsing of the nose, after swimming, helps reduce the risk of infection with viral diseases.
Prevention
- Wash your hands with soap or use antiseptics.
- Wash only in proven water bodies.
- Do not allow food to be in the heat for a long time.
- Protect the skin from the sun and insect stings.
- If you notice the first signs of the disease, contact your doctor immediately.
Summer is a wonderful period for childhood, but it also has some dangers. The task of parents is not to give up the adventure, but to ensure that they are safe. Following simple hygiene rules, monitoring your child’s health and timely consultation with your doctor can ensure safe and healthy summer time.
