The number of reported cases of syphilis is increasing. Last year there were 738, in 2023 714 cases were reported and a year before 443. “For the second consecutive year, we have registered historically the highest number of cases of syphilis in Slovakia, which confirms the adverse trend of the spread of this infectious disease,” A spokeswoman for the National Center of Health Information (NCZI) Alena Krčová said.
Up to 91.9 percent of infected persons (678 people) were diagnosed for the first time in life in 2024. “As in previous years, men (541 cases) were more commonly infected last year. 197 cases were registered, of which 26 were pregnant,” Krčová. In terms of age, syphilis was most often reported in the age group 25 to 34 years. Most cases, according to permanent residence, were recorded in the Bratislava region (184 cases).
Last year, 413 cases of gonococcal infection were reported. gonorrhea. “Although the number of infected people fell by 24, in the long run we are recording an increase in the number of diseases. For example, in 2019, 370 gonococcal infections were reported, in 2004 there were 128,” Krčová. A higher number of gonorrhea diseases was recorded last year in men (78.5 percent). Most cases were also recorded in the age group of 25 to 34 years. According to the patient’s permanent residence, the most cases were in the Trnava region.
In 2024, healthcare providers also reported 1239 cases of other, mostly sexually transmitted diseases. The most widespread are Chlamydia infections, which exceeded a thousand reported cases for the third consecutive year. Last year, NCZI recorded 1039 Chlamydia diseases, 16 more than in 2023.
