The expected meeting between the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and that of Russia, Vladimir Putin, to deal with the end of the war in Ukraine will be held next Friday in Alaska, as announced by the tenant of the White House in his social network, Truth.
“The greatly anticipated meeting between me, as president of the United States, and President Vladimir Putin de Russia will occur next Friday, August 15 in the great state of Alaska. They will follow more details,” Trump announced in his message. The meeting will be the first between a head of the United States and another Russian from which Putin and Joe Biden celebrated in 2021, months before Moscow launched their invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
In previous statements from the Oval Office, the American had been very optimistic about the perspectives of a solution to the conflict that lasts three and a half years. “We are approaching La Paz,” Trump told the press congregated for the signing of the Peace Agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan mediated by the United States. Both Ukraine President Volodimir Zelenski, and Russian Vladimir Putin want to end hostilities, has opined the Republican.
Trump’s statements came the day in which the deadline that Moscow had imposed, 10 days ago, to give significant steps towards a high fire or resigned to economic sanctions and additional tariffs, including secondary tariffs for countries that buy Russian oil. But the announcement of the meeting seems to have been enough to park the threat, at least for the moment.
Asked if this is the last opportunity that gives Putin, he replied that “I don’t like using the term ‘last chance’.” “My instinct tells me that we have a real opportunity,” he said, without wanting to comment on the deadline for Russian President.
Trump also advanced in those statements that negotiations on an “exchange” of territories are being developed. Asked if Ukraine will have to give up land in exchange for peace, he replied that “we are seeing that. We are actually contemplating to recover part and exchange part. It is complicated, but we are going to recover part and we will exchange another. There will be an exchange of territories for convenience of the two, we will talk about it later or tomorrow,” he said.
Some analysts have pointed out that Putin could offer the return of some of the occupied territories in exchange for maintaining Donetsk and Luhansk in their possession.
