The deputy secretary of the State Department of, Christopher Landau, said on Saturday (9) that the minister of the (Supreme Court) is responsible for “destroying” the relationship between the country and Brazil.
The statement is given a day after Itamaraty summoned US business in Brazil, Gabriel Escobar, and expressing “indignation” with statements from the representation and the US government.
Landau said, in a post on the X (former Twitter), that the separation of powers between government branches is “guarantee of freedom” and that no person “can accumulate too much power.”
“But a formal separation of powers means nothing if one of the branches has the means to intimidate others to the point of making them give up their constitutional prerogatives. What is happening now in Brazil reinforces this point: a single Supreme Court minister usurped dictatorial powers by threatening leaders of other powers-or their families-with arrest, detention or other penalties,” says Landau.
The deputy secretary then says that a single minister “usurped dictatorial powers by threatening leaders of other powers,” without quoting Moraes or former President Jair Bolsonaro.
“This person [em referência a Moraes, sem citá-lo] It destroyed the relationship historically close to Brazil with the United States, among other things, trying to apply Brazilian law extraterritorially to silence individuals and companies on American soil. “
“The situation is unprecedented and anomalous precisely because that person wears a judicial toga: while it is always possible to negotiate with leaders of the executive or legislative powers of a country, there is no way to negotiate with a judge, who must maintain the appearance that all his actions are dictated by law,” he continues.
Finally, he states that Moraes hides “under the cloak of the rule of law” and that the situation is a dead end because other powers say cannot act.
“If one knows of a precedent in the history of humanity in which a single unlected judge has taken control of the fate of his nation, please report. We want to resume our historical friendship with the great nation of Brazil!”, Concludes Landau.
