Augusto Melo será preso? O que pode acontecer com presidente do Corinthians image

This Saturday, August 9, 2025, Corinthians lived a decisive chapter of their troubled domestic policy. At the General Assembly held at Parque São Jorge, the Associates approved, by large majority, the impeachment of President Augusto Melo. Of the 2,037 voting partners, 1,413 (69.37%) opted for dismissal, while 620 defended the return of the leader, and three votes were canceled. The right to vote was restricted to associates with at least five years of bond and without delayed monthly fees.

This was only the second time that the club dismissed a president for impeachment – the first occurred in 1972 with Miguel Martinez. In 2007, Alberto Dualib was close to facing the same process, but renounced before.

Presence and behavior of Augusto Melo on the day

Augusto Melo arrived early in São Jorge Park, before the ballot box, and remained all day at the gym without contact with the press. He left the scene by an exit in the back during the investigation, when only five ballot boxes had been opened.

Origin of the impeachment process

The removal began on May 26, 2025, when the Deliberative Council approved the partial impeachment for 176 votes in favor and 57 contrary or null. The decision was motivated by the case Vaidebet, former sponsor of the club, in which Augusto became a defendant for criminal association, money laundering and qualified theft. The complaints were made by the Civil Police and accepted by the Public Prosecution Service.

Other investigations in progress

In addition to the Vaidebet case, Corinthians is also the target of the prosecutor about the personal use of the corporate card by former presidents. The investigation involves Augusto Melo, Duilio Monteiro Alves and Andrés Sanchez and can lead to accusations of theft and criminal association. The debts were identified in October 2023.

Pronouncement and judicial contestation

After the vote, Augusto Melo issued a statement stating that he will contest the result, alleging irregularities. He accuses that the process was led by people linked to contrary campaigns, without impartiality, and that the interim board allowed the entry of organized fans to coerce membership.

Augusto Melo also points to absence of entry registration of voters and control of the calculation by political opponents. Melo reaffirmed his innocence and said he will continue to prove it in the courts.

Continuity of management and close elections

Vice President Osmar Stabile continues in charge at an interim way until Romeu Tuma Júnior, chairman of the Deliberative Council, summons new elections according to article 108 of the Statute. Only lifetime counselors or those who have been elected to the CD can twice. The elected will be in office until December 2026. There is no date for the election yet.

Internal Support to Osmar Stabile

Rozallah Santoro, a former financial director in the management of Augusto and current employee of the Interim Board, said he initially believed in Melo’s project, but that, given the non-fulfillment of the promises, he supported the change in command. He highlighted mutual confidence with Stabile and the importance of political stability, although he avoided positioning himself about the election, as his political group, the Corinthians Grande movement, is divided.

Despite the institutional crisis, Corinthians lives a positive moment on the field. The team has five unbeaten matches and has been packed by the classification about Palmeiras in the round of 16. The next challenge will be against Youth, on Monday, at 20h (Brasília), in Alfredo Jaconi, for the Brazilian Championship.
