Cultural initiative honors Chico Mendes and reveals new talents from the Amazon

Chico Mendes’ legacy, an icon of the social and environmental struggle in the Amazon, won another chapter with the launch of the Chico Vive Award, a scarlet studio initiative aimed at visibility to artists and cultural movements that work in traditional and peripheral territories of the Amazon and the Cerrado. The goal is to design cultural and environmental expressions that, despite their relevance, rarely reach large urban centers.

The initiative is part of a digital platform dedicated to the rubber tree, whose highlight is the feature film Chico Mendes, directed by Sérgio Machado and Sérgio de Carvalho, and features the actors Jorge Paz and Bruno Gagliasso in the cast. Bruno plays Darci Alves Pereira, convicted of the murder of the Acre leader, while Jorge gives life to Chico Mendes himself. The project also brings together Joana Henning in production and includes a biographical documentary to be launched during COP30 in Belém next November.

In addition to the cinematic work, Scarlet Studio has invested in sustainable audiovisual productions, training workshops for young Amazonian filmmakers, a digital TV and social and environmental activities in Acre. Among them, actions and workshops held during Chico Mendes Week, at the end of the last year, which reinforced the memory and history of the murdered leader in Xapuri in 1988.

The launch of the prize, which took place last Thursday (7), in São Paulo, brought together names such as Mariana Ximenes, Gabriel Leone and Rafael Dragaud, as well as the scarlet studio team. For the organizers, the initiative comes at an emblematic moment, in which the Amazon becomes the focus of global discussions with the holding of the largest UN climate event in Brazil, reinforcing Chico Mendes as a symbol of resistance and commitment to the preservation of the land.

In December 2024, Acre Governor Gladson Cameli received the Scarlet Studio team, which began immersion in the state for the production of a documentary about the rubber tree leader. At the time, the manager made the state available to meet everything necessary.
