In Costa Blanca, where summer attracts crowds to beaches from locations, such as Benidorm, Changing or Calpe, there is a small village that goes unnoticed to most Portuguese. It is a destination in Spain that combines historical heritage, natural landscapes and proximity to the sea, being a quiet alternative to the busiest tourist centers of the province of Alicante.
According to the 20minutos newspaper, this locality is called Polop and rises on the slopes of a cerro, crowned by an ancient Castle of Muslim origin, dating from the twelfth century. Although mainly remaining the walls and some elements of the original enclosure, such as Aljibe and a Tower, the space remains one of the city’s main business cards, which has about 5,600 inhabitants. Part of the castle materials was reused in the construction of other village buildings, reinforcing their historical connection to the surrounding houses.
Historic Center ‘surprises’ whoever arrives there
According to the same source, those who venture through the historic center find a remarkable architectural ensemble, highlighting the church of San Pedro Apostol, from the eighteenth century, and to the Sanctuario de la Divina Autora, located in front. In the heart of the village, Plaza de Los Chorros marks the rhythm of local life, with a source of 221 spouts that has become one of the pool icons and provides a refreshing environment to visitors.
Walking the narrow streets allows you to discover picturesque and still little explored corners. Outside the urban core, rails and mountain routes, such as those who lead to Mount Ponoig, invite nature lovers to explore the surrounding landscape, in a combination of history, tranquility and panoramic views.
Between the mountain and the Mediterranean
Adds the publication that, although located a few kilometers from the coast, the village is less than 20 minutes in the beaches, such as Benidorm or Changing. This strategic location allows us to enjoy the sea and at the same time avoid the concentrations of typical tourists of the best known destinations of Costa Blanca.
It refers to the same source that POLOP is still less than an hour by a rigor, through AP-7 and CV-7673 and CV-70, which makes the municipality a practical choice for one day or longer stays. Despite its proximity to the tourist centers, it remains a place where the authentic environment of the region remains preserved.
A discreet destination that can deserve your attention
According to, Polop often remains ‘hidden’ by more famous neighboring locations, but offers a different perspective from the Blanca coast, where heritage, nature and sea coexist in balance. It is precisely because it is close to major tourist destinations, such as Benidorm and Alicante, that Polop often goes unnoticed among Portuguese tourists.
The truth is that, according to the Spanish newspaper, it is one of the villages of the Valencian community that it is still possible to explore away from tourist pressure, discovering it at its pace.
