A fire near Naples threatens visitors to Vesuvius. The authorities closed hiking trails, firefighters deployed reinforcements including aircraft and drones.

Firefighters in Italy fought with a forest fire at the foot of the Vesuvius volcano on Sunday. As a result, the authorities closed all hiking trails on the mountain, TASR writes according to AFP report.

The fire brigade announced that it deployed 12 teams and six Canadair aircraft against the fire. Flames are spreading from Friday in the National Park near Naples. Firefighters use drones to monitor the spread of fire, and reinforcements are reportedly come from neighboring regions.

“For safety reasons and the aim of facilitating firefighting operations in the affected areas, all activities on the hiking trails of the Vesuvius National Park are suspended until further notice,” the park said on Saturday.

According to the National Park Statistics, almost 620,000 people visited the Vesuvius volcano in 2024. Experts argue that European countries are increasingly at risk of forest fires due to more intense heat associated with global warming.
