Green wine is one of the best -known and oldest names of origin, officially recognized since 1908. The name does not mean that the wine is green, but that it is a “young” wine, consumed shortly after harvesting, preserving its liveliness, freshness and fruity notes. There is yet another historical explanation: the production region is extremely green due to the moist climate and abundance of vegetation, which reinforced the name. It is produced in the northwest of Portugal, in the region of Minho, which extends from the Atlantic coast to the Galicia border in Spain. The climate is Atlantic, fresh and humid, with frequent rainfall and maritime influence, which preserves the natural acidity of the grapes. There is a predominance of well -drained granitic soils that contribute to the characteristic minerality of the wines.
White green wines represent most production and use indigenous grapes such as: Alvarinho, which is aromatic, with notes of peach, apricot and floral touches, widely cultivated in the subregion of monsoon and melgaço. Loureiro is intensely floral and citrus, with great freshness. Arinto (Pedernã), in turn, present vibrant acidity, mineral and citrus notes. And in the dress there is a predominance of aromas of lump fruits, smoothness in the taste.
As for smell, we have fresh aromas of citrus fruits, green apple, pear and white flowers. In the mouth, they are light to medium, with striking acidity, sometimes a light natural frizzante, and refreshing final, ideal for young consumption. Red green wines are less internationally known, but they have a strong local tradition, especially in domestic consumption.
White green wines well combine with seafood (oysters, mussels, prawns), grilled or boiled fish, fresh salads, sushi and light dishes of the Mediterranean cuisine. Here it is easy to find them, being an excellent option for our tropical climate. Some that I suggest: Soalheiro, Yellow Green Wine Beak, Monção Walls, Casal Garcia (one of the most popular), Vila Nova Verde Branco and Quinta da Raza, Averse Vinho Verde; Highlighting that the offer, here, is full.
Green wine is, above all, the expression of Portuguese freshness and authenticity. Its whites are synonymous with summer and lightness, while the reds keep the roots and traditions of the region alive. A style of wine that, whether by vibrant acidity or pleasant rusticity, always finds a place at the table. Health!
