Australia is joined to other countries such as France and Canada and plans to recognize the Palestinian state. Prime Minister Albanese declares support for a lasting peace in the Middle East.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday that his government will officially recognize the independent Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in the UN General Assembly. TASR informs about this, referring to AFP and DPA.
“Australia will recognize the right of the Palestinian people to their own state,” Albanese told reporters. “If the Israeli and Palestinian statehood is not permanent, peace can only be temporary,” he added.
Albanese stated that he was assured from the Palestinian self -government that “Hamas terrorists would not play any role in the future Palestinian state”.
“There is an opportunity and Australia will work with the international community to take advantage of it,” Albanese said.
Discussed with multiple leaders
Before this announcement, he spoke with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Japanese Prime Minister Šigero Išib. He discussed this issue last week with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President of Palestinian self -government Mahmud Abbas.
In recent weeks, several countries, including France, Great Britain and Canada, have announced or indicated that they will recognize an independent Palestinian state during the UN General Assembly in New York. At the end of July, Macron announced that he intended to officially recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly. Canada followed him a few days later. Britain has recently openly open to Israel’s recognition of Palestine if the government of Prime Minister Netanyahu does not complete the war in the Gaza Strip.
Netanyahu recently described such corks as “shameful”. “Most of the Jewish public is currently against the Palestinian state for a simple reason – they know it will not bring peace. It will bring war,” he said. As an independent state, Palestine has already recognized more than 140 out of 193 UN Member States, including several EU countries, such as Spain and Ireland.
