It is a stone that is not of this world – and yet the subject of a very earthly dispute. The largest Mars meteorite ever found on Earth, discovered in the Sahara in the country of Niger in 2023, changed hands a few weeks ago at the Sotheby’s auction house in New York for $ 5.3 million (EUR 4.6 million). Neither buyers nor sellers are known. The only thing that is certain is that in Niger the case triggers outrage-and now also an official investigation according to BBC information. The government there speaks of “characteristics of illegal international trade”.
