Who was Miguel Uribe

Miguel Uribe Turbay was born in Bogota in 1986. He was the grandson of former Colombian President Julio Turbay, who was in power from 1978 to 1982 by the PLC (Colombian Liberal Party). Already the senator’s paternal grandfather was Rodrigo Uribe Echavarria, who was president of the PLC.

Uribe’s mother was journalist Diana Turbay, who died in January 1991 after being kidnapped at the behest of drug trafficker Pablo Escobar. .

The senator was a lawyer, graduated from the University of Los Andes and a master’s degree in public policies from the same institution, as well as a master’s degree in public administration from the Harvard School of Government.

The 1st political office was at 25, when he became a councilman in Bogota by the PLC. In 2016, he became the younger government secretary in the city’s history at the age of 30. The politician was invited to take office by the then mayor, Enrique Peñalosa. At the time, Uribe had the support of the then vice president, Germán Vargas Lleras.

Two years later, he resigned to run for the capital’s city hall. Uribe launched his candidacy independently by the movement of citizens “we advance.” The senator lost the dispute to Claudia López.

In 2021, he was invited by former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez to lead the Democratic Center’s plate to the Colombian Senate, a position he took over in 2022. He was the politician with the largest number of votes in the election.

Miguel Uribe confirmed in 2024 the pre-candidacy for the presidency of Colombia. The politician was one of the most relevant names on the right in the country, including thanks to the proximity to Álvaro Vélez.

The senator was a staunch opponent to the government of Gustavo Petro (Human Colombia, left), 1st left president of the country. One of his latest public demonstrations before the attack was a criticism of Petro’s decision to launch a popular consultation by decree to deal with labor reform.
