Governor of São Paulo states that negotiations between presidents can resolve commercial issues between Brazil and USA
The governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas (Republicans), said that direct calls between President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Donald Trump could resolve tariff issues between Brazil and the United States. The statement was given on Monday (11.ago.2025), during the 24th Brazilian Agribusiness Congress in São Paulo, an event held by ABAG (Brazilian Agribusiness Association) in partnership with B3.
“How many times will we have the connection of the Brazilian president with the American president? This is what will make a difference. For us to show and bring the arguments.”said the governor during his participation in the event.
Tarcisio stressed the importance of a diplomatic approach. The governor of São Paulo spoke about the Brazilian history of maintaining balanced trade relations with different economic powers, such as China and the United States
“Brazil has always taken the American to dance, always took the Chinese to dance. And never asked for any of the two in marriage.”said Tarcisio.
Tarcisio also spoke about the recently approved economic reciprocity law in Brazil. According to him, this legal instrument should not be used as retaliation for US tariffs.
“It’s that kind of instrument you have, you put it in the drawer and you don’t use it. […] Then it is necessary to go to the negotiation table ”said Tarcisio.
Tarcisio spoke at the end of the speech about his participation, emphasizing the need for strategic work and union. “This moment is a moment that requires reflection, requires a lot of work, requires strategy”said the governor.
“And it requires, above all, union. We can’t be the country of conflict, I think no one can handle it anymore. We can’t be the country that opposes strong and weak, which opposes rich and poor, who opposes employees and employers. This will not lead us nowhere.”.
