Representatives of five European countries have warned Israel that an attempt at annexation will violate war law. At the same time, they demand a supply of safe humanitarian aid.
He was criticized at Sunday’s extraordinary UN Security Council meeting at the level of ambassadors dedicated to the situation in the Gaza Strip Plan of the Israeli government to occupy the city of Gaza. Representatives of five European states condemned this decision and called on Israel to review and not implement it, TASR informs, referring to the portal of the Austrian public service television ORF.
“We also point out that any attempt at annexation or extension of settlements violates international law,” said Slovenian Ambassador to the UN Samuel Žgobar on behalf of the UK, Denmark, France, Greece and Slovenia. He added that the expansion of military operations will only threaten the lives of all civilians, including the lives of the remaining Israeli hostages.
These five countries, which asked for an extraordinary meeting, also called on Israel to provide extended and safe access to humanitarian aid. According to them, the militant Hamas movement must be disarmed and must not affect further development in the Gaza Strip. The area should be managed by the Palestinian self -government, which is responsible for parts of the West Bank of Jordan.
Israel refused criticism
The Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyado Mansur has accused the Israeli government of ignoring the UNSC’s positions. Therefore, the “justified condemnation” of Israel must now be followed by “fair steps”, otherwise the analyzes and descriptions of the situation in the Gaza band are insignificant. Mansur is the necessary steps to be used to extend the supply of food and medicines, the release of hostages held by Hamas, the complete withdrawal of Israel from the Gaza Strip and the creation of an international security mission to protect the population in Palestine.
Israel refused the criticism. According to the representative of the Israeli ambassador to the UN Brett Jonathan Miller, Israel has no intention of occupying Gaza. “This is a liberation from the brutal terrorist regime,” he said. According to him, Hamas is abusing the hostages and population of the Gaza band to consolidate their own position. He stressed that his country demands a civil government for the Gaza Strip and rejects the government of Hamas or Palestinian self -government.
The United States traditionally supported Israel at the meeting. According to the US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea, the negotiations were abused to accuse Israel of genocide. “These accusations are politically motivated and categorically false,” she said, adding that it is the propaganda of Hamas.
