The incident occurred at the Clairton Coke Works unit shortly before 11 am local time, leading emergency teams to move to the scene while a thick black smoke rose from the plant. Local TV images showed firefighters by fighting the flames and a damaged structure.
In addition to the fatal victim, two people are missing and several others have received medical attention, according to a statement sent by email by the Allegheny County emergency service.

Governor Josh Shapiro stated in a publication that multiple explosions occurred on the plant and that his office is working together with union leaders and local authorities.
The accident happens less than two months after Nippon Steel Corp. Complete US Steel’s acquisition of US $ 14.1 billion after a long and politically sensitive negotiation. As part of the revised purchase agreement, Japanese steelmaker has committed to invest billions of dollars to expand steel production in the Mon Valley Works complex, modernize plants, expand ore mining and build new facilities in other US regions. Clairton is part of the Mon Valley complex.
US Steel did not immediately respond to requests for comments.

Clairton’s plant is the largest bun production unit in the United States, an essential input for steel manufacturing. Located about 32 kilometers south of Pittsburgh, on the west bank of the Monongahela River, the plant operates 10 ovens batteries and produces approximately 4.3 million tons of bun per year, supplying both the commercial market and the US Steel plants themselves.
Clairton has a history of accidents and violations. Last year, US Steel signed a court agreement with the federal government because of a fire in 2018 and two energy falls. The plant also received, in the same year, a fine of $ 1.9 million for not containing polluting emissions. In 2010, an explosion followed by fire injured 15 workers after an oven of bun exploding.
The Allegheny County Health Department directed residents near the plant to stay indoors.
