Are you scared of exploded batteries of photovoltaic power plants? But the same can become a phone or an electric bike. Therefore, in the summer, give them cool and peace.
The batteries work best and safest in dry and room temperatures. And that can be a problem in summer. “For batteries are the worst high temperatures, impacts and humidity. In the summer when we travel, we spend time at the water or sports all these risks. In sports, the battery device can fall very easily and the batteries are mechanically damaged – this is true for batteries on mobile but also in the electric bike. The batteries easily damp, ”describes Kateřina Vránková from EcoBat, which deals with the collection of old batteries.

Quite fast fire
Maybe you’ve ever seen a video of how a laptop starts to burn. This is exactly when overheated or otherwise damaged battery is ignited. Although the batteries, including conventional pencil, look like compact pieces of metal at first glance, they contain an explosive mixture of chemicals inside. And when they start to burn or even explode, it’s very fast. And the fire can reach up to 1000 ° C. So nothing you would like to experience firsthand.
Summer protection
So how do you protect the battery in the summer?
- Nothing that contains lithium batteries, leave in the summer in the sun or elsewhere in the heat. Not even in a parked car.
- During storage, it is recommended not to completely charge or discharge the battery, but to maintain the level of charge of about half.
- Use protective packaging for water.
- Throughout the year, try not to expose the battery to unnecessary impacts or other mechanical damage.
- When the batteries are inflated, do not wait for anything, replace it and take the damaged quickly for recycling.
Old pieces in the box
Damaged, but also quite commonly discharged batteries certainly do not belong to mixed waste. Already because of the risks of the explosion, but also because the batteries and batteries are partially recycled. Reserve a place for them at home and take them to the collection point every few weeks. There are almost thirty thousand in the Czech Republic, so you will almost certainly have some nearby. “The collection boxes include all types of common batteries, including classic pencil or button batteries. Typically, these collection points are in shops, schools, offices or public spaces,” Recommended by an expert.
Why is this a problem?
Overheating
The battery exposed to high temperatures is also shortened. The risk of overheating is above 50 ° C (but just leave the cell phone in the sun for a few minutes). As a result, the battery can inflate, damage the device and increases the risk of starting to burn.
Impact
Mechanical damage can cause the battery packaging to damage, and this can again lead to ignition. When it happens, watch the battery behaves when charging and if it works as it should. However, if the cover is damaged, replace it directly.
Humidity
The problem is water and air humidity, which lead to corrosion of sensitive components and permanent damage to the battery. If you are going to an area with high air humidity, for example on holiday to the sea, get a waterproof packaging for your device.
