The Ministry of Civil Protection has issued the second highest level of warning and calls on the inhabitants and tourists for extraordinary caution.

Forest fires broke out on Tuesday in several tourists sought after in Greece. The local Ministry of Civil Protection issued the second highest level of warning of them valid for approximately a third of the country. TASR informs this based on the DPA report.

These alerts refer to almost the entire Peloponnese Peninsula, as well as the northwest coast of the country, the islands of Lesbos and Samos and the chalkidiki peninsula. At the same time, a strong wind should persist in several of these places in the coming days, which can cause a small spark to become a massive fire.

Fires on the islands

Extensive fire threatens houses on the island of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea, reports the Greek daily Kathimerini. Fires also stand out in the Fokida region in the north of the Peloponnese and on the island of Kefalonia, although they are not a threat to inhabited areas.

Ideal conditions for spreading flames create a long -lasting dry season in Greece, in some cases accompanied by strong winds, making it difficult for firefighters to work together. The Ministry of Civil Protection called on citizens to be careful and not to establish fires.
