Reaction occurred after president of the United States to use the Brazilian capital as a negative example in decreeing federal intervention in Washington DC
The governor of the Federal District, (MDB), sent on Tuesday (12) a letter to the president of the United States, in response to statements from the Republican they classified as “violent capital.” The document was referred to the US embassy in Brasilia. The reaction occurred after Trump, on Monday (11), to use the Brazilian capital as a negative example when decreeing federal intervention in the safety of Washington DC
The US president said that crime in the city has surpassed that of capital that, according to him, are among the “worst places in the world”, such as Brasilia,, Panama City, and Baghdad. In comparison, Trump mentioned that Brasilia would have 13 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. Official data from the DF Public Security Bureau, however, point to a rate of 6.9 – one of the smallest in the country. In Washington, the index is 41 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.
In the letter, Ibaneis attributed the “mistaken perception” to the lack of dialogue between Brazil and the United States and criticized the management of the president (PT). He stressed that his administration, from center-right and ideologically opposed to the federal government, focuses on “concrete results” in public safety. The governor stated that the DF has reached, in his management, the lowest homicide rate in the last 48 years, resulting from measures such as hiring 5,000 servers for security forces, expanding electronic monitoring points and community integration programs.
Ibaneis also highlighted social actions, such as the District Plan for the homeless population, and participatory security initiatives, such as the Community Security Councils (Consegs). According to him, the model adopted in the capital is “free of ideological bias” and inspired by the philosophy of “law and order.”
