Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán justified on Tuesday on Facebook why he did not support Tuesday’s joint statement by 26 leaders of the Member States of the European Union concerning the future of Ukraine. In his words, the document is trying to establish the conditions for negotiations for which the EU leaders were not even invited, informs the TASR newsletter in Budapest.

“Before the European Liberal-Mainstream choir again starts singing a song about ‘Putin’s puppet’, I would like to share why I could not support this statement on behalf of Hungary,” writes the Hungarian Prime Minister.

ORBÁN’s opinion

According to him, the document is trying to determine the conditions of negotiations that the Union leaders did not even invite. “It is sad that the EU has been pushed to the siding. However, it would be even worse if we issued instructions from the bench outside the pitch. The only reasonable step for the EU leaders is to initiate the EU-Russia summit according to the US-Russia meeting.

Let’s give a chance to peace! ” closed Orbán.

Twenty -six leaders of the Member States of the European Union said in Tuesday’s joint statement that Ukrainians must have the freedom to decide on their future and the diplomatic solution must protect Ukrainian and European interests. They spoke before the planned Friday meeting of US President Donald Trump and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin.

In a press release, the EU Council stated that Hungary did not join the EU Member States.

“We, leaders of the European Union, welcome President Trump’s efforts to end Russian military aggression against Ukraine and achieve a fair and permanent peace and security for Ukraine,” they said in a statement.

The leaders noted, among other things, that a fair and permanent peace that brings stability and security must respect international law, including the principles of independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and that international borders must not be changed by force.

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will talk about a possible peaceful solution of three and a half years of Russia’s war against Ukraine on Friday 15th August. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj, who is not invited, is, like Western partners, that the future of Ukraine will decide without its participation and that such an agreement would require Kiev to resign Moscow its territories.
