Electric: World autonomy record beaten by a pick-up

Chevrolet/General Motors Silverado EV exceeded the challenge of doing more than 1,609 km in a row

General Motors has announced the new world record of electric vehicle autonomy by doing more than 1,600 km in a row. Pick-up Silverado Destroved the Lucid Air Grand Touring that reached 1,205 kilometers (km) in July.

In October last year, its Pick-Up Silverado has an estimated autonomy of 792 km.

And the 1,609 km thus proved it. It is the world record for the autonomy of an electric vehicle (VE).

Still, as it says, Lucid doesn’t have to worry as its record remains comfortably in the Guinness book. GM does not mention the book or any verification by third parties and has treated essentially as an internal engineering challenge and I&D.

Super pick-up

“Obtaining this type of autonomy with a full charge does not happen by accident. Deep integration between battery chemistry, driving driver efficiency, software and vehicle engineering is required,” he said CourtGM vice president of drums, propulsion and sustainability.

As New Atlas details, each engineer brought, to this test, its own specialization by developing driving strategies.

Some of the strategies were very obvious techniques for increasing the autonomy and/or luxuries available to an engineering team that may not be available to a common driver. In addition, it had to make the long trip without air conditioning in the summer.

He strongly modified the vehicle would have gone completely against the spirit of the challenge, but the team made some minor changes that remained within the letter of the user’s manual. They inflamed all tires to the recommended maximum pressure to reduce bearing resistance, tuned wheels alignment for optimal performance, and adjusted the low-range cleans to the lowest possible level to minimize aerodynamic resistance. They also placed a cash cover on the load box for a smoother air flow.

The driver kept a Speed between 32 to 40 km/h. At such low speeds, virtually all the car’s battery energy has been directed to propulsion, with minimal energy to be consumed by other systems and functions.

Very low speed? Right, but the goal here was to take Silverado EV, and its huge 205 kWh battery, to the absolute limit, so recreate any kind of realistic driving scenario was not a prerequisite.
