Floods on the island of São Vicente, in Cape Verde, overloaded emergency services and interrupted access to important roads, said a regional civil protection counselor on Tuesday (12). At least eight people died.
On the morning of Monday (11), torrential rains hit the Atlantic archipelago located on the west coast of Africaflooding roads and dragging vehicles and people.
Councilman José Carlos da Luz informed a state broadcaster that seven people died in the floods and one person was electrocuted, adding that three others are still missing.
In one released also on Monday (11), the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Red reported that 1,500 people were displaced in São Vicente.
São Vicente usually records 116 millimeters of rain per year, according to the Cape Verde Meteorology Institute. But on Monday morning (11), the volume was 193 mm in just five hours, according to authorities.
The US National Hurricane Center said that the meteorologists expect to become the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, was located about 455 km west of Cape Verde with maximum winds reaching 75 km/h.
