Former Peru President asks Lula’s help in “War” against corruption

Former Peru President accused of attempted coup d’état in 2022, summoned President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) OE other regional leaders to “get into war” against corruption and crime. The statement took place on Monday (11/8), during a new hearing of his trial.

Castillo insisted on his innocence, stating that there is no evidence that links him to the crimes of rebellion, abuse of authority and disturbance of public order imputed by the Public Prosecution Service.

He has been arrested since 2022, accused of seeking a state self -ogolpe. At the time, the former president was trying to escape the third vacancy motion in Parliament-equivalent to impeachment in Brazil. He even dissolved the Peruvian Congress and calling new elections, a practice allowed by the country’s constitution, but was devoid of the presidency anyway.

The former president faced governability problems, as opposition dominated Parliament, and was also accused of corruption and money laundering.
