The federal government presents on Wednesday (13) a package of measures to help Brazilian companies affected by the 50% tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump on national products. The plan, which will be detailed at a ceremony at the Planalto Palace at 11:30 am, provides for a initial credit line of R $ 30 billion, with the possibility of expansion, as well as instruments for stimulating export and legal support against tariffs.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva anticipated, in an interview with BandNewsthat, like fruits, honey and vegetables; and machines, sectors with less ability to absorb shock in foreign sales. “No one will be helpless for President Trump’s taxation,” Lula said, stressing that the measure seeks to preserve jobs and open new markets for those affected. The package will be formalized by provisional measure and should include authorization for government purchases of products of affected companies, as confirmed by Finance Minister Fernando Haddad. “It is a project that contemplates the various demands of the productive sector. We had meetings with the productive sectors and it particularly meets the most affected,” he said.

The financing will be granted through Banco do Brasil and BNDES, with reduced interest and grace period. Haddad explained that the funds will come from extraordinary credit to the budget, a mechanism that does not count on the tax framework limit, and that, in some cases, access to loans will depend on the maintenance of jobs.
The plan also provides for the use of the Export Guarantee Fund (SGE) to expand coverage to exporting companies, not just those harmed by the tariff. “We are doing a structural reform in the FGE, supported by other funds, to ensure modern instruments for every Brazilian company with vocation to export,” said Haddad.
American taxation came into force on the 6th, after Trump linked the measure to political retaliation through the lawsuit against Jair Bolsonaro in the US. Although the White House has removed about 700 items from the list, strategic sectors remained subject to tariff, causing immediate drop in sales, contract cancellations and reports of layoffs.

The government signaled that the package will have tax limits. “All solutions will be inside the goal,” said Haddad, referring to the zero deficit target for 2025.
Lula said that Brazil will also seek a solution to the impasse in the World Trade Organization (WTO) and may adopt reciprocity measures, but without “bravado”. “Let’s measure the consequences of each action to be taken,” said the president.
