Israel Kats’ Minister of Defense revoked the leader of the Eyal Zamir Staff in the classroom in the context of tensions between the army and the government before a new military operation in.
“Consultations made by the Chief of the General Staff” Eyal Zamir for appointments to the military hierarchy “carried out without coordination or previous agreement” by the Minister, an Israeli Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
Kats “does not intend to discuss or approve these appointments”, added to the announcement.
Lieutenant General Zamir reacted shortly afterwards, through the army’s announcement, stating that “it is the only principle that is authorized to appoint officers from the rank of Colonel”.
“It is the leader of the General Staff who makes the decision on appointments -they are then submitted to the approval of the Minister,” he noted.
‘Contra’ lasts two weeks already
For two weeks, tensions have emerged between the continuation of military operations in the Gaza Strip with the aim of liberating Israeli hostages and Hamas’ defeat.
According to Israeli media, General Zamir is opposed to a plan ratified on Friday to take over the control of the city of Gaza, a densely populated area that currently escapes Israeli military control, which is practiced in about 75% of the Palestinian pockets.
The Chief of the General Staff, who was appointed in March after the cessation of his predecessor, said last week that he would continue to be “without fear” and in a “professional” way.
The defense minister responded that in any case the Chief of the General Staff should “determine” the government’s political decisions.
